Read Ephesians 4-6

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. In Ephesians 5:1, Paul invites us to be imitators of God. If the old saying is true, when we imitate God, we flatter him. Of course, God is not looking for flattery. But he is seeking worshipers. When we imitate him, we honor him, because he wants us to become like him.

In the process of imitating him two things happen. First, we honor and worship him. Second, our lives become a replica of his. So when Paul tells us to be completely humble and gentle (Ephesians 4:2), it’s a call to imitate God. When he says there should be no hint of sexual immorality or greed (Ephesians 5:3), that, too, would be the result of imitating God.

When I think of imitating God, my hope is that others would see God in me. It may seem funny, but I often think of the I Love Lucy show when Lucy mimics Harpo Marx  in a hotel room, as if he was looking in a mirror and seeing his own reflection. It’s gives me a visual of what imitating God ought to perhaps look like. That we mirror his every action. Check it out.
